Pointed Back Round Chaton When viewed from the front, stones are always spherical, while the facets on the back taper to a single central point. A vintage 1088 chaton resembles the "Superman" insignia when viewed from the side. Because chatons are always round, they use Stone Sizes in a manner similar to that of flatback round crystals; this is represented by "SS" numerals like SS12 or SS20. For their smaller stones, chatons are also available in PP numbers; "PP" refers for "Pearl Plate," a scaling technique that was first applied to pearls by setting them on a plate or surface with holes in it. The pearls were sized according to the holes they passed through, and the smallest crystals are now also categorized using this technique.
